[5.2] Municipal Fleet Environmentally Friendly Vehicles and Fuel The City Council’s of Almada motivation to attain a better energetic and environmental performance in the activities it conducts doesn’t rely only on short term economic criteria, but also on a view on sustainability which the Municipality adopted in the field of Local Agenda 21. Development Line number 6, included in the local strategy for Sustainable and Solidary Development: “Defend and improve public service, value the intervention of employees”, provides the framework for actions such as the environmental certification of the Municipality by the European Environmental Management System EMAS, the rationalization of consumption of the different forms of energy by the City Council of Almada and the introduction of different forms of renewable energy in Municipal buildings and infrastructures.
The reduction of energy consumption and green-house gas emissions are two aspects that cross this sustainability policy of the Municipality, and which should be extended to all of its activities, in particular to the management of its car fleet Considering the above and aiming at materializing the Measure MT4.1 of the Transport Sector “Use of Alternative Fuels – Renovation of the Municipal Fleet”, as defined in the Local Strategy for Climate Change of the City Council of Almada, the Council purchased Toyota Prius, which are hybrid vehicles, for City Councillors. The decision, taken in the field of the Municipal Fleet’s Renovation Plan, defined by the Division of Transports and Maintenance, had the technical support of Almada’s Energy Municipal Agency, who established a set of energetic and environmental requirements, to be complied with in the process of acquisition of the new vehicles for the Municipal Fleet. These were defined in the book of recommendations for the Project of Renewal of the City Council’s Fleet”.
