[5.12] Eco-Drive Safer Driving and Lower Energy Consumption[Domain: Travel Awareness] The goal of this Campaign is to attain a shift in driving behaviour and perceptions, a contribution towards the reduction of local energy consumption and an increase in road safety through awareness raising and training in the principles of eco-drive. Eco-Drive is a way of driving that allows for the reduction of vehicle fuel consumption and polluting emissions, as well as a greater driving comfort and increased road safety. The Eco-Drive campaign in Almada focused on the divulgation of the Eco-Drive principles and advantages, both in terms of energy consumption and road safety. The principles are simple, effective and easily applied – these characteristics were explored in a leaflet giving practical advice and pointing out advantages also in terms of cheaper car maintenance, lower spending on fuel and contribution for a greener planet! This campaign included the distribution of the informative leaflet – produced in Portuguese and with original design - to all the driving schools in the Council and to drivers in street-initiatives. Car windscreen sunshades with eco-drive information were also produced as a marketing tool. These were handed out together with the informative leaflet, namely in street events such as the one that took place in the National Energy day in May 2005. Eco-Drive training was arranged for the drivers of the Municipal fleet, both at a theoretical level and using an eco-drive simulator. Also, actual driving practice with monitorization equipment for fuel consumption and polluting emissions was part of the training schemes. Awareness-raising actions targeting teachers also took place. One of the theme-days of the European Mobility Week (EMW) in Almada every year since 2003 is the Eco-driver Day, when activities on this theme take place. |
