October 2007
Technical visits in the framework of PIMMS finished in October. These visits allowed for best-practice exchange with other cities, gathering good ideas for the work developed in the council. Municipal staff and a representative of the Local Energy Management Agency of Almada were in Sweden and in Italy having a close look at some sustainable mobility projects.
In Stockholm, representatives of the County Administrative Board of Stockholm received Almada’s delegation. The agenda included presentations and debates on several themes connected to urban mobility management. Sweden’s administrative organization was presented, as well as local and regional public transport management. Measures for the promotion of sustainable mobility were also presented, namely incentives for bicycle use and deterring measures for the use of the private car in the city, such as urban road tolls. Technical site visits also included: the public bicycles system; car sharing with an innovative environmentally friendly car rental connected with mobile phones; public transport operator managing the trains and bus fleet.
Still in Sweden, Växjö guided visits to the Water Treatment Plant with integrated biogas production for the supply of the municipal fleet, and a pilot infrastructure for second-generation biogas production from forest biomass. The city has the goal of becoming fossil fuel free, having hence developed many actions in order to reduce energy consumption, namely in the transport sector. In 2007 the European Commission awarded it with the Sustainable Energy Prize, which aimed at cities that stick out for their actions targeting the reduction of energy consumption and CO2.emissions.
In Italy, some projects carried out by the Province of Treviso in the field of mobility were presented. Some of these were awareness-raising campaigns for sustainable mobility, such as the European Mobility Week, and activities for the promotion of a safe bicycle use in town. It was also possible to become familiar with road safety activities developed at Treviso’s Mobility Centre and road safety projects targeting schools with a very practical approach. Treviso’s historical centre, with limited car access, pedestrian roads and cycle lanes was another highlight of this visit.
